Hawkins/Forde/Dinsdale

Xina Hawkins – Viola
Declan Forde – Piano
Jordan Dinsdale – Drums

Improvised Music

Australian violist Alexina Hawkins lives in Berlin and has performed, recorded and toured in various ensembles including the Kammerakademie Potsdam, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, appearing throughout Europe, North & South America, Asia and Australia. Alexina has performed solo and chamber music at Bang On A Can Summer Festival (USA), Festival Opera Barga (Italy), Canberra International Music Festival, Bangalow Festival, and Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music, amongst others. She has presented two solo recitals in Berlin’s weekly series for contemporary music, “unerhörte musik”, and was invited to the Flying Carpet Festival, a performing arts festival for children on the Turkish/Syrian border in 2020 (festival postponed to 2022). She has improvised, recorded and performed with an eclectic array of musicians including Anna Morley, Agnes Obel and Damon Albarn. Alexina co-founded two energetic ensembles (Phoenix Trio and sextet “hear now berlin”) with musicians who share her idealistic, energetic and open-minded approach to music-making.
Alexina studied viola with Tor Fromyhr, Caroline Henbest, Chris Moore and William Coleman, at the ANU School of Music (Canberra), Australian National Academy of Music (Melbourne) and privately in Berlin. More recently, she has attended courses taught by Tatjana Masurenko and Simone Jandl.
Declan Forde was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and has been based in Berlin since 2014 working as an improvising musician and composer. Early in his musical development Forde became interested in improvisation, being exposed to the music of Cecil Taylor and Marilyn Crispell and is involved in various aspects of the Jazz tradition, Free Improvisation and New Music.
He has worked frequently with dancers and interdisciplinary artists.
Current projects include a trio with violist Xina Hawkins and drummer Jordan Dinsdale which blurs the lines between Jazz, Neue Musik and Noise. Forde is active as an improviser performing solo piano and in 2019 was invited Berliner Festspiele to perform as part of American artist Rashid Johnson’s installation Antoine’s Organ at Berlin’s Gropius Bau July-December 2019 (part of the exhibition Garden of Earthly Delights). Since 2016 Forde has been co-curating the monthly improvised music residency Practically Married with bassist James Banner at Donau115 in Berlin.
Other projects as a sideman include James Banner’s USINE (featured in portraits and broadcasts by Deutschlandfunk Kultur and RBB Kultur), the trio FROG with violinist Fabiana Striffler and James Banner, and duo with American bassist Greg Cohen.
Beyond the world of Jazz and improvised music, Forde has performed, toured and recorded for over ten years with the Scottish singer and artist Rachel Sermanni. He plays piano on her first release ‘The Bothy Sessions’ (2011) and ‘So it Turns’ (2019).
Jordan Dinsdale is a young British drummer living in Berlin. He has studied Jimmy Cobb, Chris Cheek, Jimmy Wormworth and Greg Cohen. Since moving to Berlin in June 2019, Jordan has recorded a trio EP with the great Greg Cohen and Declan Forde entitled FORDE/COHEN/DINSDALE. In winter 2019, Jordan and bassist Yonatan Levi recorded in with Ofer Ganor and Ilya Lushtak, two companions on the New York scene. After meeting Doug Weiss in early 2020, they have already collaborated in different situations and share a love for the same beat. They currently have a trio with Béla Meinberg on piano. Some of Jordan’s teachers are Jimmy Cobb, Johnathan Blake and Eric McPherson.

Do, 9. September
SoKo Steidle

Rudi Mahall – bcl
Henrik Walsdorff – as
Jan Roder – ba

Fr, 10. September
Urban Animal

Tobias Krüger: Altsax
Nicolas Greiner: Guitar
Stephan Deller: Bass
Ludwig Bormann: Synths, Sampling, FX
Lukas Rutzen: Drums

So, 12. September
Thomas Franz
