Johannes Metzger Quartett

Marc Doffey – Saxophon
Morten Duun Aarup – Gitarre
Fabian Timm – Bass
Johannes Metzger – Schlagzeug/Komposition

Was ist Heimat

Original music somewhere between instrumental and vocal, jazz mixed with electronic and pop! Constantly Moving Happiness Machines

Constantly Moving Happiness Machines

Jonathan Lindhorst – tenor sax
Mark Pringle – piano
Huw V. Williams – bass
Max Santner – drums

Constantly Moving Happiness Machines is an exciting new international collaboration featuring fresh and wonky grooves, long form compositions, and exploratory free improvisations. The musical relationship of German- Canadian saxophonist Jonathan Lindhorst, Welsh bassist Huw V. Williams, and Austrian drummer Max Santner dates back to their early meeting at the JIMS workshop in Salzburg back in 2008. Since then, the three have kept up a musical dialogue over the past decade, which has developed even further with the inclusion of British pianist Mark Pringle to form “Constantly Moving Happiness Machines”, an exploratory quartet searching for musical progress.

Fr, 23. Oktober
Filipe Duarte – Room in the Middle

Filipe Duarte – Guitar / Composition
Julius Gawlik – Saxophone
Simon Quinn – Double bass
Mathias Ruppnig – Drums

Room in the Middle is Filipe’s debut album as a leader.
The compositions feature intense, through-composed, sections side by side with freer parts of collective improvisation.
Filipe’s writing proposes new roles for each member of the quartet, with concepts like melody, solo and accompaniment often intentionally left undefined.
The result is a very personal and sophisticated sonic experience that defies categorization and is sure to keep listeners on their toes.

Scopes

Scopes is an European jazz ensemble rooted in Berlin and Paris. The group consists of four musicians who met in New York, where each spent several years and developed his own style in music.
Four individual composers with sense for the pulse of time have joined to form a whole and create a distinct bandsound. While their music is deeply grounded in the jazz tradition, their songs serve as a platform to explore new realms through improvisation.
Like a kaleidoscope, their music evolves in each concert and creates an unique experience for the listener. The acoustic quartet produces a transparent, modern sound that stands out from the classic line up of alto saxophone, piano, double bass and drums.

Matt Chalk (US)
Alto Saxophone:
Alto saxophonist Matt Chalk grew up in a musical household in Kansas City but found artistic maturity in New York. He studied at The New School under Jaleel Shaw. Also a prolific composer in his own right, Chalk’s own music bridges a lyrical abstraction of contemporary classical music and jazz improvisation. His influences run as wide as painter Richard Diebenkorn to composer Henri Dutilleux, poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti to chef Alice Waters. Chalk currently lives in Paris where he composes, writes, and paints.

Tony Tixier (FR)
Piano:
Tony Tixier has been a steady member of Logan Richardson’s Band for years and has also performed with Christian Scott’s group. The French pianist released his album “Dream Pursuit” with Logan Richardson, Burniss Earl Travis and Justin Brown in 2012. Since 2014, Tony has been living in New York, where he has established himself as part of the jazz scene and has performed with the jazz trombone legend Dick Griffin, as well as Seamus Blake and Kendrick Scott, among others.

Tom Berkmann (DE)
Bass:
Tom Berkmann studied double bass at the Jazz Institut Berlin and then at Manhattan School of Music in New York as a DAAD scholar . He was a semifinalist in the International Double Bass Competition “Bass 2010”, received the German Academy Award for “Best Film Score” in 2013, and won the German Critics Award at the Berlin Film Festival for the Soundtrack of the Feature Movie “Oh Boy”.

Mathias Ruppnig (AT)
Drums:
Austrian drummer and composer Mathias Ruppnig is an indemand musician in the Berlin jazz scene. With his own projects “The Spinning”, “Square Quartet” and “DACH” he tours Europe regularly. He completed both a Bachelor and Master’s Degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts, in Graz, Austria. As a leader he released two albums “square” and “The Spinning” with the Viennese label, Session Work Records. In 2014, he won the “Downbeat Award” for College Graduate Outstanding Performance in the Latin group category with the KUG Composers’ Ensemble. Since 2018 a member of the Tobias Meinhart 4tet & Kurt Rosenwinkel (Sunnyside Records).

The Doug Weiss Berlin Band

The Doug Weiss Berlin Band

For over 30 years I have made a career of elevating the performances of Artists such as Kevin Hays, Peter Bernstein, Mike Moreno, Lizz Wright, Brian Blade, Eddie Henderson, Clifford Jordan, and Al Foster.
I have been a student not only of their music, but of the way in which they lead, and have sometimes thought that maybe I would do things a little differently. Now I am ready to take on this responsibility. I love music and want to share something special.
It is for this reason that I have chosen the pianist Bela Meinberg. He has harmonic and melodic taste and sensitivity, and also takes the role of ‘member of the percussion section’ quite seriously. Jordan Dinsdale is a subtle and swinging drummer who has studied the lineage of rhythmic greats and comes prepared to contribute to the vibe every time. Ori Jacobsen brings beautiful sound, presence and storytelling to the table. I am so pleased to have met each of these remarkable young musicians and to be trusted with leadership of this group.
We will play our interpretations of music that we all love, including a few of my own compositions. And in the words of my mentor Al Foster we will strive to bring the audience “Love, Peace, and Jazz.”

Andres Marino & Lucia Boffo

Andres Marino & Lucia Boffo duo was formed in early 2014. This project inhabits the songwriting format, however, it is allowed to take the song to less traveled places. They fuse elements of the harmonic conception of jazz, electronic music, poetry and narrative. In addition, adding voice as an instrument. In 2015 they recorded their first digital EP “Cíclico”, which was presented in the city of Buenos Aires, San Luis Tierra del Fuego and Córdoba. In 2017 they recorded and released their first record material in physical LP format, “Diente de León”. This album was released independently in Argentina, and also by the label Imparmaint Records, in JAPAN. In 2019 they made their first European tour, with presentations in Germany. Currently (2020) they are working on new music, exploring elements of electronic music in greater depth. They have shared the stage with: Mono Fontana, Martin Sued, Melina Moguilevsky, Florencia Otero, Tomas Fares, Ser Arrebol, Nadia Larcher, Nadia Szachniuk, Quique Sinesi, among others.

This trio cobbled together a set of stream themed music, which was live streamed back in the early days of the current global panic. Since audiences are back in fashion, one set will be stream themed and the other earth themed – as is our wont.
So come on down. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, it’ll change your life.

Greg Cohen is a bass player.
He has also worked as an arranger, producer, musical director and composer for the theatre, film, television and recording studios.

Structucture

Asger Nissen / Alto Saxophone
Victor Fox / Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet
Roger Kintopf / Bass
Felix Ambach / Drums

ENG:
Structucture unites four individuals, who found their common idea of a musical attitude since the first day they met. Their music aims to create a collective expression of creativity with great energy. The atmosphere shifts between energetic impulses and phases of silence, which are controlled and processed by concentrated interaction of all four musicians.
Roger Kintopf’s compositions fathom the possibilities of interaction within this quartet without a harmony instrument. The music is based on strong structures, rhythm and harmony, which let the saxophonists Victor Fox and Asger Nissen operate with versatility. Felix Ambach and Roger Kintopf are not merely a rhythm section. As a strongly interlocked unit, Structucture develops an attitude, which focuses the sound of the whole band as well as the flexibility of each individual musician within that constantly moving entity.

Schuler/Stemeseder/Dunston

Laura Schuler – violin
Elias Stemeseder – piano
Nick Dunston – double bass

NICK DUNSTON is a composer, improviser, instrumentalist, and “indispensable player on the New York avant-garde” (New York Times). In 2019 he was awarded the Van Lier Fellowship by Roulette Intermedium, which supported the world premieres of The Floor is Lava! (upright bass quintet), and La Operación (double saxophone trio with soprano voice). Also in 2019 he released his debut album Atlantic Extraction for double bass, drums, electric guitar, flute, and violin. From 2016-2019, he was a monthly contributor to Hot House Jazz Magazine. (vimeo.com/342125717)

LAURA SCHULER explores the violin’s diverse sound capacities while simultaneously weaving in her voice. She takes inspiration from nature, the I-Ching, and her wide musical background. What emerges are sounds and songs reverberating around a complex tension that defy any simple categorization. Laura works currently on her solo project under the name “Kate Birch”, leads her quartet and is part of the trio Esche. (www.lauraschuler.net)

ELIAS STEMESEDER performs on the acoustic piano and synthesizers in a variety of musical idioms ranging from the song-oriented music of Jim Black’s trio to contemporary classical pieces by John Zorn to the electric music of Eyebone. Current projects include collaborations with John Zorn (John Zorn’s Bagatelles), Greg Cohen Quintet, Philipp Gropper’s PHILM, Jim Black’s Malamute, Anna Webber’s Percussive Mechanics, Robert Landfermann Quintet, and OTIS+WEDDING. TRIBAL GATE

TRIBAL GATE is a musical group formed in Berlin in the summer of 2020. Consisting of Eldar Tsalikov on woodwinds, Martin Buhl on double bass and Fermín Merlo on drums, the group plays freely improvised music with a shared goal in mind, namely to explore the art of improvisation in as many different contexts as possible.
This has brought the group to seek out different locations all around Berlin, from clubs and galleries to the forests and the streets. And now the trio is gonna bring their fresh sound in Donau115.

To get an idea, take a look at this trailer of a session that the band did in one of the Berlin’s forests: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diT-jr8BvOQ

ONA is a Slavic word which translates as SHE. Both active in the Berlin jazz scene, a mutual inspiration led to the idea of sharing a monthly series at their favourite club in Berlin, Donau115. Every month one of them will perform with some of their favourite musicians, either with existing bands or brand new projects – and you never know, they might even play together sometimes!

So we are more than happy to get out of our snail-shell and share an evening of music with our beloved Donau115 audience.

Depending on everybody´s mood we can throw in Lana del Reys Venice Bitch, or for the more demure ones, pure and chaste folk melodies, till we throw in the sponge.

Johannes Haage Drift

Johannes Haage guitar, compositions
Matthias Pichler bass
Joe Smith drums, compositions

english:

These musicians of German, Austrian and American origin met in their current home-base Berlin and have been playing extensively as a band for many years.
The Trio “DRIFT” mainly works with compositions by guitarist Johannes Haage and drummer Joe Smith which offer a great variety of stylistic starting points from which they embark on new musical journeys together, creating open spaces for spontaneous improvisation and mutual interplay. As in a dreamlike state, their music drifts from sparse to dense, from pop-like structures to free improvisation – but always staying true to the melody of the song and the calling of the moment.

Their current second album “Darwin´s Blues”, came out in 2019, which features both bass players who are actively involved in the band: Founding member Matthias Pichler (Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio, Marc Copland etc.) as well as Oliver Potratz (Klima Kalima, Helen Schneider, etc.)
The new compositions by Haage and Smith on the Album expand the concept of their debut album “Drift” by adding new elements like overdubs, loops, extended instrumental techniques and electronic modifications to the acoustic sound of the Band, thus opening up new pathways for fresh new live exploration of the material.

deutsch:

Esther van Maanen plays a solo brunch set.

During a solo concert by Esther van Maanen, you can expect a mix of classics from the sixties and her own brand of bluesy melodies. She covers Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Joni Mitchell among others.

She creates an intimate setting with songs that need an attentive ear. In her music she explores the combination between folk melodies and jazzy rhythms. She accompanies herself on guitar and piano, allowing her melodies to move with the flow of the instruments. People who were young in the sixties can be carried back to that time, and millennials might feel like buying a record player after a concert.

///////////////////////////// TWO-SONG TUESDAY ////////////////////////////////
[sign up 19:00 // start 20:00]
–> Beschreibung in Deutsch weiter unten

Calling all songwriters!
Calling all composers and instrumentalists and synth wizards!
Calling all poets and writers and storytellers!

Do you have new solo or duo material you’re itching to present?
Join us for Donau115’s regular open stage series, Two-Song Tuesdays.

Your set may include TWO SONGS or last TEN MINUTES.

“How do I get booked?”
Just show up // There is no pre-booking // Sign up opens at 19:00 (first come, first booked) // The first performer will begin at 20:00 // No soundcheck – so be ready. Slip on, blow minds, slip off.

“What can I play?”
This is entirely up to you. Out of respect for our neighbours:
– you may NOT use loud percussion and loud bass-heavy signals into the PA.
– you are welcome to use our backline, which includes:
— piano
— generic vocal microphones
— a small terrible PA, accepting guitar/XLR cables (new one coming soon!)

“But what about Covid-19”
Yep, we know. 🙁 No more than 25 people may be in our stage area at any time. Those wishing to enter after that capacity has been reached can enjoy a drink or a taco in the back room or outside on our sidewalk seating until more spaces become available.

“Anything else?”
Donau115 is a very fun but weird musician’s musician kind of bar, come expecting oddballs.

SoKo Steidle

Oliver Steidle – dr
Rudi Mahall – bcl
Henrik Walsdorff – as
Jan Roder – ba

Konzertbetrieb gesichert. Er ist seit Jahren Mitglied bei „PHILM“, „Der Rote Bereich“,
„Klima Kalima“ , spielte mit Peter Brötzmann, Andrea Parkins, Alexander von
Schlippenbach, Aki Takase, Louis Sclavis, Tristan Honsinger, Trevor Dunn, u.v.a., jettet
