Michel Meis 4tet feat. Théo Ceccaldi

Alisa Klein – trombone
Cédric Hanriot – piano & rhodes
Stephan Goldbach – double bass
Michel Meis – drums
Feat. Théo Ceccaldi – violin

ENG:
Diversity runs through the Michel Meis 4tet’s music like the proverbial thread. Through its diverse moods and complex yet never arbitrary structures. The band offers compositions that are as elaborate as they are playful, as danceable as they are melancholic. After their acclaimed debut album “Lost in Translation”, they now released “Kaboom”, a forceful sonic detonation as well as an impressive “tour de force”. In addition to his usual acolytes, Meis has surrounded himself with violinist Théo Ceccaldi for a long-winded, sinuous, and progressive album that features a dazzling and unpredictable crossing of genres and mood, giving jazz a fresh touch by introducing elements from (post-)rock, electro-pop or classical music.
DE:

SOPHE

Sophia Bicking – Keys & Vocs
Hotte Schulz – Synths
Christian Dähne – Bass
Hans Otto – Drums
Sophie Lindmüller – Backings Vocs
Maja Mágedli – Backing Vocs

SOPHE is the freshly formed project of the Berlin singer, songwriter and lyricist Sophia Bicking. From years of experience working in a variety of musical projects and exploring the human voice arises Bicking’s new venture; a fusion of wide-ranging genres and influences.
Her clear, warm lead voice hovers over interlocking background vocals, enthroned over pop and jazzy harmonies. SOPHE sounds as if Joni Mitchell, Nai Palm, Florence And The Machine and Frank Ocean are meeting to jam, whilst Lianne La Havas and Jeff Buckley are dreaming up a new, melancholic ballad in the next room.

Céline Rudolph’s SONIQS

Céline Rudolph (voc, perc, electronics) & Sebastian Merk (dr, keys, electronics)
feat. Regis Molina (flute, alto, perc) Povel Widestrand (piano)

CÉLINE RUDOLPH’S SONIQS
“I love the adrenaline, the here and now, the surprise and the power which the stage grants me.” –
Vocalist and composer Céline Rudolph glides between Berlin, São Paulo, Paris and New York, between tongues and genres, always landing in the very heart of music.
Now new music is on the way. She has been working a lot with multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Merk this summer. And now they are really excited to share the spirit live with Cuban alto/flute player Regis Molina and Swedish pianist Povel Widestrand, all based in Berlin! Most of the music is built upon vocal songlines that they loop. „Songlines“ ? That’s how Céline calls melodies repeated in a circle. Each songline belongs to only one song. Sebastian samples Céline’s looped melodies and re:constructs them with electronic sounds and filters. On top of these songlines, she composed instrumental melodies and poems.
Sebastian Merk specially created a unique set for SONIQS, combining electronics, keyboards and drums which he manages to play simultaneously, giving him the freedom to communicate with the music intuitively. Céline particularly enjoys the cooperation with these incredibly inspiring musicians because she feels that it truly allows her to connect the ease and natural flow of rhythm and sound sculptures, and her own songs and compositions. Above all, this band pulsates with the rather effortless vocal and improvisational artistry of Céline Rudolph, which includes exciting rhythmic inspirations, highly sophisticated melodic improvisations and fascinating sound poetry.
„One of the jazz vocals records of the year without a shadow of a doubt and the main reason for this beyond her fine voice is the quality of the compositional arc and great sweep of style at play throughout.“ Stephen Graham MARLBANK.NET (UK), 3 dec 2019 about PEARLS

Peter Gall Quintet

Wanja Slavin – as

Peter Gall – dr

„German percussionist Peter Gall’s debut is, quite simply, amazing. At times it sounds like a traditional jazz while at others it’s more of a cosmic, psychedelic exploration. (…) Is this album weird? Indeed. But it is a gorgeous listen easy to love? You bet.“
Treblezine, 10 best Jazzalbums 2018
„Cinematic ambience, electronic washes, and indie-rock flourishes actively coalesce with the contemplative chamber jazz reveries and edgy post-bop eruptions. But what all this talk of genres boils down to is that Paradox Dreambox is music for an imaginary film: catchy melodic hooks that hint at monumental scenes, rhythmic chatter that doubles for dialogue, and diverse expressionism, as if replicating a large cast of personalities.“

Simon Below Quartett

Fabian Dudek – Alt-, Sopransaxophon
Simon Below – Piano, Komposition
Yannik Tiemann – Kontrabass
Jan Philipp – Schlagzeug

„Elements of Space“ erschien am 18.

UASSYN

Tapiwa Svosve – Alto Sax, Bells
Silvan Jeger – Bass, Bells
Vincent Glanzmann – Drums, Bells

. Progressives .

Aurora Nealand and Friends

Aurora Nealand – Saxophone
Leo Forde – Guitar
Declan Forde – Piano
Bass – t.b.c.

“Aurora Nealand is all over the current New Orleans music scene. She seemed to emerge out of nowhere. Some of her appeal is that she has a humble nature, coupled with a fiery attack when she plays, and a real fearlessness about taking risks and getting involved. She plays solo performances with a gas mask and an accordion. You’ll see her playing soprano sax and clarinet exchanges at Preservation Hall with her traditional jazz band The Royal Roses. You’ll see her playing duos, trios or performing her own original compositions at the Ogden Museum of Art. These are just a few of the interesting things she gets up to. I have seen her under deeper cover than that, and been amazed at how easily she blends in or stands out. Whatever style she is playing, she becomes the Music.” – New Orleans

Presents

http://www.auroranealand.com/

An established bandleader, composer, performer and improviser, Aurora Nealand has become a prominent force in the New Orleans music scene since she first arrived in 2004. Combining the “formal education” – a music composition degree from Oberlin Conservatory and training at the Jacques Lecoq School of Physical Theatre in Paris – with the “informal” experience of playing music in the streets and clubs of New Orleans and throughout the northern Hemisphere, Nealand has emerged as an innovative, sensitive and daring music creator and performer.
She is most recognized for her performance on saxophones, clarinet and vocals and has been at the forefront of the revival of New Orleans Traditional Jazz amongst the younger generation of the city’s musicians. After playing and learning as a sideman in established New Orleans Bands for several years, (Panorama Jazz Band, VaVaVoom, The New Orleans Moonshiners), in 2010 she formed her own Traditional Jazz band “The Royal Roses”. The Royal Roses released it’s first album, “A Tribute to Sydney Bechet: Live at Preservation Hall” to national acclaim and Nealand was voted as one of Downbeat Magazines top ten rising stars for soprano saxophone in 2010.
Nealand grew up in a musical family in California listening to Preservation Hall Jazz Band recordings side by side with Stravinsky, Joan Baez and the Pixies. Later, during her time at Oberlin College/Conservatory she was exposed and fell in love with the recordings of Mingus, the soundscapes of Mort Subotnik and the performances of Laurie Anderson. With a strong interest in interdisciplinary work and sound for theatre and installation, she moved to Paris to study at the Ecole du Theatre Physical Jacques Lecoq. Upon returning to the states, she bicycled cross-country collecting audio interviews and stories in rural America to be used in a series of compositions about true “American Dreams”. This bicycle trip landed her in New Orleans, which has acted as her home base since 2005. In New Orleans she began playing traditional jazz, jazz manouche of Django Reinhardt, as well as Balkan/Klezmer music. She quickly became involved in the local improvisation scene as well, making frequent appearances at the Open Ears series playing her own compositions with various ensembles and artists.
In addition to leading the Royal Roses, Nealand is also the leader/frontman ofNew Orleans premier rockabilly band “Rory Danger and the Danger Dangers”, and as performs frequently with her solo project, “The Monocle”. She also is a member of Panorama Jazz Band and Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship. In 2010 and 2011 she appeared frequently as herself in the HBO TV series, “Treme”.
Nealand has performed extensively in New Orleans at clubs, in the Jazz and Heritage Fest, FrenchQuarter Fest and Satchmo Fest. She has also performed frequently in New York City at Lincoln Center Summer Festival in NYC, the BlueNote, Knitting Factory, Barbes and has premiered original works at Symphony Space and Alice Tully Hall. Internationally she has appeared at the Istanbul Jazz Festival, London Swing Festival, Barcelona Swing Out, and has toured several times around Irealand, Sweden, Germany , France and the Balkans.
//
Sometimes it’s a real blessing, a gift, to encounter music that isn’t dutifully trying to Prove Something, insisting that we admire its Authenticity. Guitarist Leo Forde has got the wonderful notion into his head and fingers that music, candid and gentle, ought to be enough for anyone. And he’s not only intellectually right, but emotionally so.

JAMIE & I.M.H.O.

JAMIE
Sofia Eftychidou (bass)
Sophie Lindmüller (vocals)

Sophie and Sofia met in Berlin for the first time in 2013 and soon started playing together.
After a gap of nearly six years living in different cities, they reunited and decided to finally form a duo, based on their enthusiasm for the same songs and sounds.
Working on some favorites and originals, playing around with improvisation and the simplicity of a beautiful melody – all in the spectrum of just bass and voice.

//////////////////

I.M.H.O.
Emilia Golos (Piano, electronics)
Zuza Jasinski (vocals, effects)

Emilia and Zuza met in Warsaw few years ago when they both lived there and they continued their musical friendship after they both moved to Germany. For their mainly improvised tunes, they use mostly their own texts and take them as a starting point, since words are a very important medium for both of them. They perceive the creative process and the intimate conversations as complementary, making music as a prolonged version of talking with each other.

ENG:
“The masterly played Oud and elaborate tripping of the double bass meet somewhere on the borders between folk and jazz, and in the wonderful singing of singer and songwriter Eden Cami both worlds occur […]”
(Jan Wagner, DIE ZEIT)
Out of Berlin’s bustling music scene come the authentic-unique sounds of KAYAN, a group dedicated to folk music from the Levant, combining jazz elements and singing in languages that rarely come together in a positive context: Arabic, Hebrew and the occasional English. Drawing from sources all over the Middle East, the quartet around lead singer Eden Cami transcends borders and language barriers. Adding improvisation and own compositions, Kayan creates a fascinating and emotional vibe on stage, reuniting two sister languages and musical traditions of both Arab and Jewish roots. In times of tension and conflict it is a daringly positive approach that recalls what unites rather than divides us.

DE:
(Jan Wagner, DIE ZEIT)

#8: WILDERN

Tobias Christl (voc/eff/key)
Keisuke Matsuno (guit)

Jazz singer/songwriter Mirna Bogdanović is combining vocal and instrumental, individual and collective, real-time and post-production, perception and reality: all presented on her debut album “Confrontation” (Klaeng Records). The album was awarded “Debut Album of The Year” by the Deutscher Jazzpreis and is on the Bestenliste 2/2021 of the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik”.
The band is going to the studio in January, to record Mirna’s second album – the program of which you will be able to hear at Donau115 on this very night. The band will also play songs from the first album.

///////////

A native Slovenian/Bosnian that’s now based in Berlin, Bogdanović is a Downbeat award winner, former member of the German National Big Band (BuJazzO), scholar of the University of Arts in Berlin, and Slovenian Ministry of culture. She is an active member of the Berlin jazz scene and has collaborated with numerous international musicians in Germany and abroad.
Not too many singers have the strength to make themselves independent from the vocal point of view in their own music. Mirna Bogdanović succeeds in squaring the circle by thinking like a pianist, guitarist, saxophonist or producer.
– Wolf Kampmann

“Singer/composer Mirna Bogdanovic has been a strong presence on the European jazz scene for some years now. Her sultry tone, expressive phrasing and total musicality, make her the choice of many musicians “in the know”. Comfortable in all walks of musical life, Ms. Bogdanovic is guaranteed to please.” – Greg Cohen

Lucia Boffo & Quique Sinesi – Songs From Cuchi Leguizam

Cuchi Leguizamon is one of the best-known composers of Argentine Folklore music. His music not only has references to the traditions of Argentina but also to Debussy and Bill Evans.
Quique and Lucia have embarked on the journey of reinterpreting the music of this beloved composer, daring to cross the boundaries of form and structure, allowing the language of improvisation to be the starting point for their arrangements and interpretations. Lucia and Quique propose a journey into the Argentinean landscapes, tinged with Jazz textures and colors through their arrangements.

Alex Ventling Trio

Alex Ventling (NZ) – prepared piano, synth
Elias Weber (DE) – double bass
Phelan Burgoyne (UK) – drums

This is the music and improvisations of New Zealand pianist, Alex Ventling, and his long friendship with drummer, Phelan Burgoyne, and more recent addition of bassist, Elias Weber.
Long-form improvisations conjure up compositions, that appear as mountains might elude out from behind the fjord mist. Yes, think New Zealand landscapes but with European edginess.

Gregor Lener’s Floating Time

Gregor Lener – Trumpet/Compositions
Bernhard Ludescher – Keys
Felix Barth – Bass
Markus Daßau – Drums

Gregor Lener is an Austrian trumpeter and composer who lives and works in Berlin. One of his most important new band formations is the project ‘Floating Time’, consisting of four musicians who, despite different life paths and commitments, have always been able to find each other and ventured a new beginning in spring 2018.
Musically, the quartet moves in the jazz-fusion area. Catchy trumpet melodies merge with driving rhythms and funky bass lines, enveloped by spherical synth surfaces.
The constant attempt to embed or rediscover the musical roots in new jazz contexts has shaped Gregor Lener for many years. The balancing act between the musical world of his childhood, the constant reorientation of his Tyrolean roots, made him search for his own voice and find it in his compositions with his quartet.
After the debut album ‘Shore Of Now’, which has already been presented to an enthusiastic audience all over Germany, a second album is now in the making and will also already be part of the concert programme.

Trio Grenzgänger

Manuel Borraz Monasterio – Klavier
Victor Vivar – Bass
Ruben Staub – Klarinette, Bassklarinette

Plague Fun: Corona Rules

Case numbers are low, but the bug’s still around so we will be taking many measures to make sure we’re all doing our part to end the pandemic once and for all.

Since November 23rd we implement the so called 2G+rule at Donau115. This means only people with full vaccination/recovery and a negative Schnelltest can come inside (2G+ = geimpft/genesen+getestet = vaccinated/recovered+tested).

1: OUTSIDE: contact tracing – To join us outside, you must provide contact tracing information. We will keep this information safe for the required amount of time and destroy it with fire once that time has elapsed.

2: INSIDE: vaccinated or recovered + negative test – To join us inside, you must provide contact tracing information as above. Additionally, you must provide proof of full vaccination or recovery and a negative Schnelltest, without exception. You cannot get in with just a test (neither “Schnelltest” nor PCR-Test). Once you’re inside you don’t have to wear a mask anymore or keep minimum distance. Standing at the bar is also allowed again.

3: BE PATIENT AND FLEXIBLE- These rules are subject to change. We follow the directions of the Berlin Senate and when they provide new guidelines we will follow those. Always check the FB event or the website prior to coming to the concert to make sure you’re prepared for any government limitations that may have been imposed since last time you checked.

Timo Vollbrecht FLY MAGIC (New York/Berlin/Seoul)

Timo Vollbrecht – sax
Keisuke Matsuno – guitar
Elias Stemeseder – synthesizers & piano
Dayeon Seok – drums

Based out of Brooklyn and rooted in Berlin, saxophonist-bandleader Timo Vollbrecht moves at the intersection of composed and improvised music. His compositions are song-oriented while organically combining elements of jazz, post-rock, new music, and electro-acoustic soundscapes. FLY MAGIC is his signature ensemble. The band tours worldwide, appears at major festivals, released two albums, and is gearing up for a third one. For the first time, Vollbrecht is bringing his Brooklyn-line up to Berlin to feature his longtime musical collaborators: Sound-wizard-guitarist Keisuke Matsuno, Elias Stemeseder on keys and synth-bass as well as drumming-star Dayeon Seok. They will present brand-new tunes, searching for the paths less traveled and capturing the moment of surprise.

Do, 18. November
Hammers & Plectrums// Jason Oberman

Hello hello dear Berliners!
Come out to see a night of wondrous music

💜
💜
💜

Lineup : 1st set: Hammers & Plectrums: Jason Oberman (guitar) and Tamir Kedem (piano)
2nd set: Jason Oberman (guitar) and a special guest or two (!!)

Hammers & Plectrums will present composed and improvised music for piano and guitar duo. Here’s their story:
On a fabled day at California Institute of the Arts, Tamir and Jason began their explorations. From that point of surprising yet undeniable resonance, music sprung forth through free improvisations and a vast collection of written works. The pair created a language for improvisation, which tells a shared narrative. Compositions are colored by the individual’s background, but come to life through the collective. Hammers and Plectrums have performed throughout Los Angeles and have continued remote collaboration throughout the pandemic.
Next, Jason Oberman will be performing a collection of original works for solo acoustic steel and nylon string guitars. While living in Berkeley, California during the Corona lockdown, Jason began taking his guitar to various locations and discovered alternate tunings that seemed to resonate in a particular way with each space. This organic exploration led him to create a collection of compositions dedicated to places that touched his heart. He will offer music dedicated to ancient forests, sun-kissed parks, swan filled rivers, and houses colored by warm cups of tea and morning greens.

About Tamir: Tamir Kedem, based in Tel Aviv, Israel, discovered the magic of piano at the age of 9. At 21, he studied at the Center for Jazz Studies in Israel, performing with and leading ensembles throughout the country. Following his studies in Israel, Tamir went on to California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles to pursue his BFA in Jazz Piano. At CalArts, he studied with David Roitstein and played and performed with Joe LaBarbara, Bennie Maupin and Larry Koonse. In addition, he formed his own band, “Tamir Kedem Septagon”, consisting of 7 musicians. They performed Tamir’s original music throughout the Los Angeles area. Tamir received the Disney scholarship from CalArts, the Artist Grant from The Anton Yelchin Foundation in 2019, and other awards. His first album, “BabaYaga” was released in late 2019 and was performed throughout Los Angeles.
Tamir has developed a unique and personal compositional practice. He creates a story within a carefully constructed musical universe.
About Jason: Born in Los Angeles, Jason began playing guitar when he was five. By the 6th grade, he fell in love with jazz. Jason received the Jerry Margolis Jazz Award his senior year of high school. Along with this award, he also received a Semi-Finalist Award in The Music Center’s Spotlight Jazz Instrumental Competition and Honorable Mention for the Young Arts Award. He then went on to spend two years studying at Eastman School of Music where he developed both as a performer and as a composer, exploring jazz and classical music. After Eastman, he transferred to California Institute of the Arts where he received his Bachelor’s degree in jazz guitar in 2020.
Jason now resides in Berlin, Germany. He currently composes, arranges, and performs with a wide variety of ensembles. In addition, he is an active and devoted teacher, focusing on a sustainable and heartfelt approach to guitar.

Malstrom

Florian Walter – Saxophone
Axel Zajac – Guitar
Jo Beyer – Drums

The Malstrom devours everything in its reach, be it light, sound or matter. It sucks everything into its vortex, drawing it deeper and deeper into the very center of the Malstrom. But what do you find at the core, at the very bottom of the swirl? The eye of the storm? A void, sheer nothingness? Is it a place of calmness that contrasts the furious edges? Does the Malstrom ever end?
And most importantly: Are you ready to find out?

My Sister Grenadine

Frieda Gawenda: vocals, flugelhorn, baritone horn, flute, casio, objects
Vincenz Kokot: vocals, ukulele, guitar, words

My Sister Grenadine play folk with the joy of experimenting. Built from a variety of instruments, entwined with vocal harmonies and a love for details. Their music juggles with sound and language, arrangement and reduction, authenticity and camouflage. Free Folk, John Cage Pop, radical softness.
My Sister Grenadine lives at various places. These places are songs, these songs are people.
Let´s meet and walk for a bit while listening to each other.

The duo will present their new album “sleep material” (Solaris Empire/BrokenSilence) released in October 2021!

“My Sister Grenadine is a songwriting project that gets you with its stunning songs, which always sound light and sensual but are enormously complex and substantially designed. Very fresh, very skillfully conceived and very, very beautiful.” – Intro

EN
Researching the balance in the coexistence of composition and improvisation, precision and authentic personal expression, contemporary music, jazz and greek folk music, greek percussionist Evi Filippou formed the quintet inEvitable.
Greek traditional rhythms, rembetiko melodies from the ’20s and reharmonisations of beloved folk songs flirt with the experimental sound of Berlin’s jazz scene. The listener enters a microcosmos which resembles at the same time a cabaret, a contemporary music concert, a greek feast and New York in the ’60s as Evi imagines it.

DE
