Birgitta Flick Quartet

Andreas Schmidt (p)
James Banner (b)
Max Andrzejewski (dr)
Birgitta Flick (sax)

The quartet, praised by the critics for its extraordinary sensitivity and virtuosic and spirited playing, is considered as one of the most interesting projects of the young German jazz generation. Initiated by the Berlin based saxophone player and composer Birgitta Flick, it was founded as a band that is clearly shaped by her compositional voice, but at the same time approaching the music together as freely and openly as possible; with artistic and improvisatory impulses by all the band members. In 2013 the band released its debut album “Yingying“ on Double Moon as part of the Jazz thing “Next Generation” series. After two more albums, concerts in clubs and at festivals throughout Germany and internationally as well as cooperations with musicians in Sweden and Saudi-Arabia, the quartet releases in May 2022 “Miniatures & Fragments“, its 4th album for Double Moon Records.
“If the color studies referenced by Birgitta Flick on her third quartet album were to be conceptualized, they would make up a mottled, impressionist canvas. The brush strokes – or instrumental detail – fade into one another with infinitive intricacy and subtly emotive touches.“
Ammar Kalia, Downbeat, 2/2019
“The quartet of tenor saxophonist Birgitta Flick with Andreas Schmidt (piano), James Banner (bass) and drummer Max Andrzejewksi presents a really colorful, varied and profoundly sophisticated album (…). The intention to improvise is consistently perceptable and it’s obvious that this group has been together for a long time and can interact perfectly.“
Teddy Doering, Jazzpodium 12/2018-1/2019

Soulcrane

Matthias Schwengler – Trompete
Matthew Halpin – Saxophon
Reza Askari – Bass

(Jazzthetik – Sep 2020)
„This album is highly recommended!“
(Jazz in Europe – Jul 2020)
„Another Step We Take ist für jene ein Must, die die Essenz von Tönen spüren und genießen wollen.”

Mikey Sykes DJ Set

*Rescheduled from June 10*
For this one we’re goin deep in the rhubarb for a rad, or at least rad-ish musical journey which will be tough to beet ah jfc it’s a Mikey Sykes (of Zukunft, LEMONGRAB, Loophole and more) psych, kraut, afrobeat, 60’s and garage DJ set and everyone’s welcome. 23:15 – end, no cover.

Born with a name that seemed to predict his future, Mikey Sykes has been following the gospel of psychedelic music since his beginnings in the avocado groves north of San Diego, California. In 2016, Sykes co-created the garage-psych outfit DUUNS. Known for shows in weird places and constantly switching instruments, they quickly grew into a staple in the San Diego DIY scene. In search of greener musical pastures and with a europhilic itch to scratch, Sykes emigrated to Berlin to seek his creative fortune and quickly formed the neo-krautrock band Zukunft, with Adrian Bang (ex – Aqua Nebula Oscillator, Tangerine Dream) and Ted Bernays (Ex-Monsieur Royal). Along the way, Sykes was brought by his bandmates into the fray at Loophole, the legendary DIY arts space and venue in Neukoelln, and has been leading the team there since clubs re-opened. In late 2021, joined the Berlin-via-Montreal garage punk band LEMONGRAB on the bass.

“From the first minute, the exceptional imposed itself! A sound, a flow, a musicality that carried me away.” – Franck Bergerot, Jazz Magazine

JAMIE ft. special guest

JAMIE is a Duo. JAMIE are Sofia and Sophie.
They’ve met in Berlin for the first time in 2013 and soon started playing together.
After a gap of nearly six years living in different cities, they reunited and decided to finally form a duo, based on their enthusiasm for the same songs and sounds.
Working on some favorites and originals, playing around with improvisation and the simplicity of a beautiful melody – all in the spectrum of just bass and voice.

Sofia Eftychidou (bass)
Sophie Lindmüller (vocals,efx)

very special guest joining in for a couple of songs:
Arne Braun on the guitar !

Spielen! Darauf kommts an! Wie Kinder, wie verrückt! Schnell, langsam: egal!
Play! Fun! Joy! Music can be hectic or relaxed, green or yellow. Germany, Denmark and the UK are getting together for a European Union within various styles of music!

Jordan White’s Redbank

Redbank is the name of a creek which runs through North Richmond, NSW, where Jordan’s grandmother lives on Guringai country which was never ceded. It is also the name of a large housing development in the same town. The name ‘Redbank’ acts as a reminder of the complexities inherent in heritage and tradition, as well as their relevance to contemporary developments, whether artistic or otherwise.
Jordan founded the group Redbank in early 2019, aiming to explore concepts from the spectral music of Gerard Grisey and Kaija Saariaho in combination with ideas from traditional and modern music from Mali, Mozambique and Cuba in a semi-improvised context. Lorenz Heigenhuber, Georg Demel and Max Stadtfeld join Jordan in a quartet with a great degree of sonic and temporal range, trying to build something new, but anchored in their subjective understanding of a range of traditions.

Ganna Gryniva & Tal Arditi Duet

Ganna Gryniva – Voice, loops, effects, compositions
Tal Arditi – Guitar, voice, compositions

Two up-and-coming protagonists of the Berlin music scene Ganna Gryniva and Tal Ariditi create an unexpected world of colors. Playfully and with great joy they improvise on old Ukrainian folk songs, their own compositions and well-known pearls.

“Strong voice, strong sound: Ganna Gryniva” – Deutschlandfunk Kultur

With roots in Ukraine and Germany, the Berlin-based vocalist, composer and bandleader Ganna Gryniva aims to combine various musical worlds, from jazz to folklore music. In 2020 Double Moon Records and JazzThing Next Generation released GANNA´s album „Dykyi Lys“ („Wild Fox“ from Ukrainian) that received remarkable international recognition. In 2018 Ganna finished her studies in jazz music at the Music Conservatory Franz Liszt in Weimar.
“On the guitar, Tal Arditi takes the space he needs. Out of quiet moments, he rushes forward with effects and distortion, and then withdraws again as if nothing had ever happened. This enables an enormous dynamic range and complexity.” – Deutschlandfunk Kultur

In 2016 Tal Arditi graduated from the renowned Rimon School of Music in Ramat Hasharon near Tel Aviv with a jazz diploma. At the age of 18 he moved to Berlin. In 2020 Berthold Records released Arditi’s album “Colors”. The result is a rich, original sound that mixes jazz, rock and classical music with Brazilian accents.

Colin Webster – Saxophone
Noah Punkt – Double Bass
Mark Holub – Drums

The trio WPH_3 concisting of saxophonist Colin Webster, Bass player Noah Punkt and drummer Mark Holub deliver raw, guttural free jazz in the tradition of the past masters. Extreme lively, vital and communicative music with no net and double bottom: pure emotions!

London based saxophonist Colin Webster established himself quickly on the European avant garde scene. Collaborating with some of the key figures in improvised and experimental music, Webster is known for working from extreme sonic palettes – from minimal to maximal, constantly pushing boundaries.
Noah Punkt is a Bass Player based in Zürich. After focussing on rock–ish and punky hi energy jazz with protean reality and punkt3, he now is about to strive for acoustic power and finesse on the double bass.
Mark Holub is best known as leader of avant-jazz quintet Led Bib, a unit with a discography that boasts several critically acclaimed albums. Now a resident of Vienna, he is also highly active within the Austrian experimental music community.

Sa, 21. Mai
Phillip Dornbuschs Projektor

Phillip Dornbusch – Sax / Cl
Johanna Summer – P
Johannes Mann – Git
Roger Kintopf – B
Philip Dornbusch – Dr

Maximen lauten: experimentieren, ausprobieren, tunlichst Wiederholungen
vermeiden.

EN When Dornbusch plays, he doesn’t necessarily do it according to the book. His
maxims are: experiment, try things out and avoid repetitions if possible. For this,
open, flexible kindred spirits are needed, who also have an excellent command of
their instrument. Therefore, it took much longer than just a few phone calls to put
together “Projektor”, this young researcher quintet, which is now releasing a work
with “Reflex” (Double Moon/inakustik) that also opens a new chapter for the
successful Jazz thing Next Generation series. The current sequel in the series is
actually an album like a reflex, perhaps the first one that doesn’t start with
finished concepts, but looks like a blank that everyone can bend, grind or knock
into shape at will. Dornbusch naturally composed with notes, wrote down certain
parts quite precisely to consolidate the basic idea of the respective piece, but
leaves at least as much open. In this context, the saxophonist often speaks of the
“character of music” or of the “atmosphere”, encouraging his fellow musicians to
play completely freely as well as unpredictable solos. Dornbusch thus proves to be
the somewhat different architect. “I draw the plan for a house, the floor plan, the
fireplace and certain rooms. The others can add the rest with all their creativity.”

Born in the happiest country on earth (Finland), multi-instrumentalist Aleksi Oksanen makes infectious indie pop songs about romance in the Information Age. His sampled drums, sunny guitars and growling, crooning vocals are coloured by his dusty reel-to-reel tape machine to create the warped, sizzling soundscape where his internal monologue echoes. Equally inspired by modern indie-pop acts such as ‘TV Girl’ and ‘Lime Cordiale’ as well as various Bossa Nova and Jazz artists.
After playing in Indie-Rock bands (The Usual Boys amongst others) ever since he could legally drive a moped, Aleksi wanted to write indie-pop bangers that were unapologetically fun. Aleksi writes, records and produces all his tracks in his hole-in-the-wall studio on the banks of the former Berlin Wall. He records his songs onto cassette and plays them live with his handy-dandy cassette player.
He released his first single ‘Over Over’ on 22.04.2022. A buttery smooth, groovy modern Indie Bop about wanting what you can’t have. He has 2 more singles coming out in the spring and early summer of 2022, each catchier than the last.
//
The Fall Guy is a Singer-Songwriter project by Jaakko Kacsóh. Born somewhere between Rhine, Danube and the Baltic Sea, for now stranded in Berlin like all the other beautiful phantasts. His music is influenced by a love of classic songwriters, the joy of playing around with language, and the fact he left his electric guitar at his parents‘ place when moving out years ago and never thought of retrieving it Available in Deutsch & English. Debut EP out… at some point this year

In the wake of the global pandemic, Japanese-American fiddle player Davis West sought to bring a unique mix of sounds to the front of the German music scene: 1. raw, acoustic textures of bluegrass and folk fiddling, 2. thick harmonies and a free-improvisational spirit of jazz, and 3. catchy pop melodies. Bringing together a cast of world-class talents, the project Bedroom Bluegrass was born.

Olga Reznichenko Album Release

Olga Reznichenko Trio: Album Release “Somnambule” (Traumton Records)

Olga Reznichenko piano, comp.
Lorenz Heigenhuber bass
Maximilian Stadtfeld drums

Pianist and composer Olga Reznichenko (*1989) founded her current trio for the final exam performance of her Bachelor of Music degree at HMT Leipzig in 2018. She has since remained in constant on and off stage dialogue with fellow members Maximilian Stadtfeld (drums) and Lorenz Heigenhuber (double bass), with the repertoire that took shape after Reznichenko’s graduation receiving its public premiere at the Hot Club in Lisbon. The trio has since made the most of Germany’s lockdowns by performing a number of high-quality streamed concerts, for example at the LOFT studio in Cologne.
The forthcoming album by the Olga Reznichenko Trio, Somnambule, is due to be released on Traumton Records in spring 2022. Characterised by a striking will to create, the classically trained pianist’s pieces blend intuitive musicianship with clearly formulated approaches to mood and timbre. Her compositions play with influences drawn from classical modernism, minimalism and modern jazz, and owe their highly individual aesthetic to not only the complexity of their harmonic and rhythmic structures, but also moments of subtlety and boldness as well as captivating points of melodic arrival and departure.

Christoph Möckel Trio

Christoph Möckel – Bassklarinette,Saxophon, Fx
Oliver Lutz – E-Bass,Fx

Beachball / Rachel Silverstein / Nelli and the Midwives of Ontario

A BEACHBALL is an inflatable ball for water games or for songs that are played too fast with lots of words. Their large size and light weight require little effort to propel them through a series of nonsense narratives that usually play out on unsuspecting string instruments, though keys have occasionally been known to be involved. Some particular beachballs were born in Texas but have been living in Germany for the better part of their adult life and therefore have lots of thoughts and feelings about lots of things that they express through ‘music’ so idk just come and find out.

Klima Kalima

Gitarre Kalle Kalima
Kontrabass Oliver Potratz
Schlagzeug Christian Marien

Ihre früheren CDs “”Loru”, Chasing Yellow “und “Helsinki on my mind” ernteten international sehr gute Kritiken.

Kami Maltz

Kami Maltz – vocals, autoharp, ukulele, looper

Kami Maltz brings the resonance of her native Israel, the passion of her second home, Argentina, and a decidedly New York electronic vibe to her solo performances.
With her smooth voice, Kami conjures a sensuous combination of folk and electronic elements; playing her main instrument, the autoharp, along with live looping, vocal effects and improvisation. Living in Brooklyn for many years, Kami’s musical origins date back to the Tel Aviv indie scene around 2010. She’s inspired by folk music of the early 70s as well as contemporary musicians such as Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens and Laura Marling.
“I love Kami Maltz and her beautiful strangeness. With her music, it’s like walking in a mysterious forest with fairies, elves and secret doors to new and amazing worlds.” – David Pearl, Telavivian
“Kami’s voice has the dimension and warmth of a true artist, which bleeds out onto the song in an authentic way you don’t necessarily hear everyday in this disposable music ecosystem we now live in.” – Josh Woodard, Black Cat Tapes
“Kami Maltz has wowed listeners with her smooth voice, her blending of folk and electronic elements, and her ability to craft songs about complex emotions through catchy hooks and poetic lyrics.” – Will Sisskind, The Deli Magazine

Kenny Warren Trumpet
Andreas Pichler Drums
Matthias Pichler Bass

Kenny Warren grew up in Denver CO, where he was inspired at a young age by local trumpet greats Ron Miles, Al Hood and Greg Gisbert. In 2002 he moved to New York to study jazz at SUNY Purchase where he met collaborators like Bobby Avey and JP Schlegelmilch. After graduating in 2006, he moved to Brooklyn and quickly became an active member of the improvised music scene. He has performed with a who’s who of improvisors from his generation as well as with luminaries like Tony Malaby, Chris Speed, Angelica Sanchez and Brad Shepik.
Joining the brass band Slavic Soul Party in 2008 began the expansion of Warren’s melodic concept to include Roma music and Arabic maqam language. As a composer Warren’s music was first featured on 2 albums by instrumental rock collective NOOK. In 2010 Warren formed Laila and Smitty, named after his great aunt and uncle. That band which started out playing country-blues standards and Warren’s folksier compositions, evolved into a singular avant-song-writing outfit which Bird is the Worm calls “massively genuine and unabashedly heart-on-the-sleeve open and honest”. Laila and Smitty has released 3 LPs, most recently in 2019 on happylucky records. Meanwhile Warren continued to develop as a free improvisor, recording records in 2014 with the collective ZhirtZ n ZkinZ (Sulde) and in 2015 with The Sandra Weiss Quintet (Leo Records).
In 2017, The Kenny Warren Quartet released Thank You For Coming to Life (Whirlwind Recordings) which highlights Warren as a jazz composer and soloist. The album was heralded as “Boldly creative and superbly orchestrated…A masterful album… Stunning.” by Radio REC. In 2018 Warren released YLA (promnight), a solo cassette which resulted from a series of home recording experiments done on a creative retreat to California that winter. In April 2020 Whirlwind released Warren’s trio record called In The Heat, featuring Matthias Pichler on bass and Nathan Ellman-Bell on drums.
During the covid era Warren has focused on home recordings. His latest release, a solo trumpet record called Forehead, is available exclusively on his bandcamp page. 2021 will see the release a series of experimental electronic EPs.

Join us for a night of originals and favourite songs.

ONA is a Slavic word which translates as SHE. ONA is Mirna Bogdanovic from Slovenia and Olga Amelchenko from Russia, two Berlin-based musicians who met at the Jazz Institut and have been friends ever since. Both active in the Berlin jazz scene, a mutual inspiration led to the idea of sharing a monthly series at their favourite club in Berlin, Donau115. Every month one of them will perform with some of their favourite musicians, either with existing bands or brand new projects – and you never know, they might even play together sometimes.

GER

EN
The songwriting duo “Gazelle & the Bear” is presenting their debut album “Weird Shaped Clouds”, a collection of songs which playfully connects pop music, modern Jazz and Hip Hop. Stories about self-love, confrontations with oneself and others and the ongoing dance between wanting and having to do something and still encountering yourself with honesty. In their creative process Ines Kolleritsch and Julian Berann created an intimate space, a warm cloud of sound which embraces the listener’s ears. “Weird Shaped Clouds” is a play between complexity and simplicity in the most gentle way.

With “Danke der Nachfrage” Alexander Winkelmann put out one of the best records of 2021, and so it follows logically that this, an AW DJ set at Donau115, will likewise go down as one of 2022’s best bar DJ sets. Right?

MELANOIA

BMC Records, VÖ: 5/2019
Dejan Terzic: Schlagzeug, Glockenspiel, Kompositionen
Christian Weidner: Alt-Saxophon
Jozef Dumoulin: Flügel, Fender Rhodes
Ronny Graupe: 7-saitige Gitarre

TOBIAS MEINHART – THE PAINTER

TOBIAS MEINHART – TENOR SAXOPHONE
EDEN LADIN – PIANO
MATT PENMAN – BASS
OBED CALVAIRE – DRUMS

The creation of music shares much in common with creation in the visual arts. Both musicians and visual artists speak of and deal in colors, hues and textures in their compositional processes. Saxophonist/composer Tobias Meinhart has developed near synesthetic visualizations as he performs and hears music. His new recording, The Painter (Sunnyside, 2021), presents his recent work of diverse, brilliant pieces meant to brighten the world’s canvas.
The ensemble that Meinhart assembled to record these new pieces consists of a number of the saxophonist’s favored collaborators, including pianist Eden Ladin, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Obed Calvaire. These musicians, in this and similar configurations, have been the saxophonist’s regular associates on stages like the 55 Bar, Blue Note and Birdland in New York City over the past two years.

Downbeat ★★★★: “Highly impressive, packed with wonderful music”
JazzTimes (Editor’s choice): “Remarkable clarity and creativity”
Jazzwise: “Powerful and virtuosic but heartfelt”
Neue Musikzeitung: “Visionary of the now. You have to love it.”
