Lucia Boffo trio presents NOMADE

Lucia Boffo: vocals, piano, Ableton live and composition
Mathilde Vendramin: cello and vocals
Leo Gerstner: drums

The Argentinian singer and composer presents music from her first solo album NOMADE with her trio integrated by piano, cello, drums and vocals.

Her music lives in between Jazz, Argentinian folk, instrumental and experimental music.
.
“Nómade is an album of stories that are slightly immersed in various musical genres, but in which the protagonists are the stories themselves. Concocted layers, loopings, mixes of analog and digital sounds, superimposing elements, generating settings so these stories could be told.

Combined in this body of work, is my youth (Ushuaia), my first experiences with a variety of music styles (Buenos Aires) and my recent training as a jazz singer (Berlín), and now can be heard in what is a new me.” says Lucia.

inEvitable (changes)

Evi Filippou – vibraphone, voice, percussion
Andi Haberl – drums
Arne Braun – guitar
Eldar Tsalikov – alto sax, clarinet
David Helm – bass

inEvitable is the latest musical endeavor of Evi Filippou. It revolves around experimentation on the forms of Greek folk, jazz and improvisational music.

The need for personal expression led the percussionist and songwriter into a path of musical research on her listening roots, back to the folk heritage of her home country, with tunes that range between timeless traditional melodies, the modern singer-songwriter tradition and the folk songs of the ’60 and 70’s.

At the same time, her course in the contemporary and improvisational Berlin scene has mingled with this deep endemic investigation.
This particular merge of genres and personal experiences, resulted in the creation of inEvitable, a band comprised of Eldar Tsalikov (clarinet, alto saxophone), Arne Braun (guitar), Moritz Baumgärtner (drums) and Robert Lucaciu (double bass).
On December 2nd, inEvitable shows up with a different Rhythm Section for some invitable changes.

Bruchgold & Karotte (Schleiermacher/Hochapfel/Rössler/Fischerlehner)

Johannes Schleiermacher: Tenor Saxophone, Flute.
Jörg Hochapfel: Piano, Melodica, maybe Guitar.
Isabel Rössler: Double Bass.
Rudi Fischerlehner: Drums.

BRUCHGOLD & KAROTTE is the freely improvising companion to Jörg Hochapfel’s surrealist Jazz combo „Bruchgold & Koralle“, again featuring saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher, and joined by the brand new rhythm section of Isabel Rößler and Rudi Fischerlehner.
It’s the first time all four of those genre-defying musicians actually meet on a stage, so be prepared for anything: exciting and unexpected things might happen!

JOHANNES SCHLEIERMACHER joined the band of Free Jazz legend Gunter Hampel at age 17 and soon after moved to Berlin, where he still lives.
He founded „Woima Collective“ in 2009 and „Onom Agemo and the Disco Jumpers“ in 2012, releasing 5 albums as band leader and producer.
He is a steady member of duo TRAINING, Max Andrzejewski’s Hütte, Shake Stew, Bruchgold & Koralle and Rodinia, while also playing with Hermeto Pascoal, Tony Allen, Perry Robinson, Shabaka Hutchings, Jimi Tenor and the Poets of Rhythm.
https://wordpress.johannes-schleiermacher.de

JÖRG HOCHAPFEL is a player of keyed instruments and part-time guitarist, based in Berlin.
Current projects are surrealist jazz band Bruchgold & Koralle, modular synth duo Palais d’Amour with Uwe Haas, exotica Zabots with Nils Kacirek and post-anything-project Hunger.
He’s also part of Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers, Fabiana Striffler’s Archiotic and Max Andrzejewski’s Hütte Plays Robert Wyatt project, as well as having been a long time member of Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra and a short time member of the Jimi Tenor Band.

ISABEL RÖßLER is a German jazz bassist and improviser. After studying music in Nuremberg and Tallinn, she moved to Berlin in 2019.
She is very active in the city’s fluid free improv scene and became a steady member of the Bigband „The Omniversal Earkestra“, performing every Monday.
Besides her numerous collaborations with local and international artists, she has toured with her trio „Flut“ all over Germany and eastern Europe.

RUDI FISCHERLEHNER lives in Berlin and plays drums in various different musical projects that fall between improvised and experimental music, jazz and post-rock.
He also composes and produces music for bands, film and performances. His current projects include the drum solo project 15 8 SLUM, Xenofox with Olaf Rupp, Der Dritte Stand with Matthias Müller and Matthias Bauer, and Ohlmeier / Khroustaliov / Fischerlehner.
He also plays or has played with Gorilla Mask, the Julie Sassoon Quartet, Fiium Shaarrk, Tonia Reeh, Tristan Honsinger, Matthias Schubert, Mia Dyberg, Joke Lanz, Zsolt Sőrés, Erste Stufe Haifisch, the Sound 8 Orchestra and many more.
As a producer and composer for film soundtracks he contributed to movies by Ella Raidel, Johanna Kirsch and Katharina Lampert and was involved in the art, video or performance work of Wilhelm Groener, Alterazioni Video and Katrin Plavcak among others.

Re: 2nite Borges/Henkel/Dyberg/Virtaranta

Sofia Borges drums
Brad Henkel trumpet
Mia Dyberg altosax
Antti Virtaranta doublebass

Re: 2nite is a new Berlin-based free improvisation quartet that takes itself and the listener on a journey into the moment. Re: 2nite reflects the many rhythms and movements of city life.
Acoustically distorted yet tuneful trumpet/saxophone lines weave in and out of each other intertwined with clear percussion beats and expanding use of the double bass, and suddenly Re: 2nite turns the direction in a split second.
A deep arching bass tone leads the listener into a circular calm universe. The next city corner could show you hypnotizinging dance parties, construction work or the wind moving the leaves of the city trees.

Fink 70s Revisited

ENGLISH:
Johannes Fink assembled this band to perform his latest compositions. Complete with wah-wah effects on the cello, the tunes borrow from 1970s funk while mashing up material that ranges from the eccentric to the clichéd.
”Fink’s fingers sing so sensationally that you want to see it because you can’t believe your ears.”” (R Dittmann, Bad Alchemy)
“”Johannes Fink plucked and stroked his 5-string cello with a smile of amazement, as if his hand was being held from a higher place.”” (K Gohlke, TAZ)

Companion Songs is an experimental folk-rock project by guitarist Marco Mlynek with Max Andrzejewski on drums.

Lisbeth Quartett

Charlotte Greve – saxophon
Manuel Schmiedel – piano
Marc Muellbauer – bass

2022 German Jazz prize artist of the year, saxophonist Charlotte Greve, shows how far her 12-year-old Lisbeth Quartett has come in its chamber-musical confluence of reedily murmuring wistfulness, minimalism, improv outbursts and effortless collective interplay on Release (Intakt). — John Fordham, The Guardian, July 8 2022 (EN)
Best of Jazz on Bandcamp, June 2022

“Whereas conventional melody tends to light the path that’s directly ahead, in the hands of the Lisbeth Quartett it instead casts its light in all directions, illuminating the environment in which the ensemble operates. The effect is one of melodic echoes, fragments that interact with harmony and percussion. I’ve been championing the music of Charlotte Greve for the better part of 10 years, and the saxophonist’s quartet with pianist Manuel Schmiedel, bassist Marc Muellbauer, and drummer Moritz Baumgärtner is one facet of Greve’s compelling recorded history to date.”

Devin Gray’s Motian To Bop

Tobias Delius – Tenor Sax
Igor Osypov – Guitar
Florian Mueller – Guitar

Phil Donkin – Bass
Devin Gray – Drums

I was in New York and my mother was 3 hours away in Rhode Island. I didn’t see her or even hardly talk to her. We talked a little on the telephone but not very much. In those days you made a long distance call! And I didn’t see her for almost 5 years and then she died. I felt like shit after that. Cause you always say, like, “Well, you know, there’s time, there’s time, I’ll hang with her, I’ll see her.”

And then the same thing happened with Bill,. He invited me to a party in 1976. I went up to his pad and we talked and hung out. That’s when I first started having my own band, I was going to Europe and I was getting into writing and thought to myself, “Well, shit, I’m hooked up with Bill again. I’d like to hang with him.”

I can learn so much about composition and stuff that, when I was playing with him I wasn’t really into writing music. He did encourage me, and I did write one piece of music. I wrote a couple of notes and I asked him about it, and he kind of put some changes to it and we talked a little bit about it. – Paul Motian

Chrome Hill

Asbjørn Lerheim – baritone guitar
Roger Arntzen – double bass
Atle Nymo- sax

The Norwegian experimental jazzrock noir band Chrome Hill is guitarist Asbjørn Lerheim, saxophonist Atle Nymo, bassist Roger Arntzen and drummer Torstein Lofthus.

At the concert at Donau 115 Chrome Hill perform as a trio with guitar, bass and sax. Since their startup in 2001 they have slowly transitioned from your typical sixties-acoustic-jazzoutfit into a now more cinematic and rock attitude of jazz noir, and with extended sounds. Chrome Hill has toured in Norway, Sweden, England, France, Portugal and Japan, and they released their sixth album «This is Chrome Hill”” on Clean Feed Records in 2022 to much acclaim.

The music on the album has been inspired by contrasts, both in life, the nature on the small island Sula on the west coast of Norway, where guitarist and composer Asbjørn Lerheim has his origin, but also by the contrasts in the daily life and experiences from Japan, where Chrome Hill has toured regularly the last five years.

The members of Chrome Hill also known from bands like I.P.A, In the Country, Lisa Dillan Quite Quiet Project, and comes from a broad musical background. Chrome Hill has by the press been described as «intense alternative Americana» , «Norwegian jazz supergroup» «sparkling guerilla jazz» and «desert rock from the top shelf». References like the band Earth and Bill Frisell has also been used about Chrome Hill.

Bad Alchemy (Germany): Das Saxofon kommt ins Flattern, die Gitarre hält windschief und mühsam Tritt, Noisefetzen halten gerade so die Blöße bedeckt

Jazz Trail (USA): «The diverse range of moods and arrangements given by Chrome Hill has my approval.» https://jazztrail.net/blog/this-is-chrome-hill-album-review

Jazz Journal (UK): «Solid stuff»

Jazz Japan/Hiroki Sugita (Japan): “”The band has a unique musicality which features the fusion of improvisations and noise-rock””

2022 she got nominated for the german jazz award.

Her debut album Mahagoni was nominated by Deutschlandfunk Kultur in the category of “Best Album of the Year”. Her second album Sweet And So Solitary is considered “revolutionary in jazz“ by Zitty magazine. Regarding her current album Archiotíc, Deutschlandfunk said: “…allowing virtuosity and humour to dance around each other in composition and performance in a way that is rarely heard.” Radio Bremen2 describes her as one of the “most sought-after violinists in German jazz and pop”.

She is selected this year as artist in residence at the Cite International des Arts in Paris.
In 2016, she was awarded a New York scholarship. She was supported for many years by the Yehudi Menuhin association.

The experience colored his later studies of improvised, classical, and experimental music. His mentors include the bassists Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, Laurie Anderson, Tom Waits), Samuel Suggs (Concert Artists Guild), Paul Kowert (Punch Brothers), J.A. He developed original scores for 2018’s gifts and Elsewhere, which opens this October. He is currently scoring Cora’s new work-in-development, Grove, which premieres in 2021.

Bilger is also fascinated by the natural world. While studying evolutionary biology at Yale University, he co-authored a study on musical structure in birdsong with the ornithologist Richard Prum and wrote Aviary, a piece that uses songbird songs as raw material for a series of improvisatory and through-composed movements. Last fall, he joined the labs of Julia Clarke and Michael Ryan at UT Austin to start a PhD on the evolution of vocal communication in birds, bats and frogs. His scientific work is supported by fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and UT Austin.

Bilger currently lives in Berlin, Germany, where he splits his time between writing, performing, and CT-scanning bat larynges at the Museum für Naturkunde. Further information at hansbilger.com.

Word Night #1

Remember watching wordless animated movies and feeling the words of the story form in your mind? Remember leafing through a picture book, reading the sparse hard sentences, and dwelling on the images? Something happens. What is it?
Ruby Bilger and Chad MAtheny wrote poetry that Andi Haberl and Evi Filippou transformed into music. The poetry will be projected behind Andi and Evi while they play. We’ll turn the lights off and each watch our own imaginary cartoons.

Zusammen mit Harfenistin Andrea Voets arbeitet sie an Live Film Musik Projekte (musical journalism, u.a. “Xenitia – a documentary concert about migration”). Zola Mennenöh “A labour of love”

Zola Mennenöh – Voice,
Sissi Rada – Harp,
Simon Toldam – Synth/Piano

„A labour of love“ TRIO is a new intriguing contemporary chamber music setting with german, Copenhagen based singer/composer/improviser Zola Mennenöh, greek, Berlin based harpist Sissi Makropoulou and Copenhagen based Simon Toldam.
In an electroacoustic sonic universe extraordinaire, the three musicians explore Menennöh’s delicate and enchanting music, between beautiful harmony and abstract dissonance, simplicity and complexity, following an improvising, creative approach. In this project Mennenöh steps into new realms of alchemising contemporary music and avant-pop influences.

For this new work she examined states of softness, velvet, silk and paper as visual representation for states of physical, mental and spiritual states of existence. Eamplifying the quest for a reality with more balance between masculine and feminine energy and a shift of power structures toward love as the foundation of one’s existence and actions.

Zola Mennenöh (DE) released her Debut Album „Longing for Belonging“ on New York based label figureight, lead by Shahzad Ismailiy. „Longing for belonging“ was nominated for Deutscher Jazzpreis as „Vocal Album National“ in 2021. The Guardian listet Zola Mennenöh as on of 30 “Best new artists in 2021“.

Atomic Fruit

Martin Lundfall – vocals, synthesizers, trumpet, bass
Federico Lenzi – drums
Raphaël Giraldi – electric guitar, vocals
Farhad Mirza – electric guitar

Blending psychedelic rock, trip hop and desert blues, the eclectic Atomic Fruit is a band that defies the divide between rock and electronic music.

With their effects-laden guitars, dreamy vocals and mesmerizing grooves, the Berlin based four piece ensemble takes the listener on a journey through different soundscapes as their songs develop and evolve. Often marked by ominous harmonies and suggestive lyrics, their music is a response to the modern world – our attempts to control and understand it, the ambitions that quickly become our undoing, and the life-affirming power of transcendental experiences.

After a quick rise up in the Berlin underground scene, Atomic Fruit is currently in the process of recording their debut album to be released in early 2023.

Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee

Malo Moray with Bethany M. Roberts (Electronics, Voice, Violin)
Ben Osborn (Electronics, Piano)
with a support solo set from Bethany M. Roberts

‘Fields’ are the energetic entities that permeate everything in the universe at the quantum level. They are everywhere, yet invisible. Music is also everywhere, inside us, around us, even if we don’t hear it. To this fascination, to the essential importance of the invisible for human existence, Malo Moray and his Inflatable Knee dedicate they fall tour and single ‘Fields’ (release Oct. 24, 2022).
Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee is the experimental ambient collective of Leipzig-based double bassist and composer Martin ‘Malo’ Riebel, who sets out into “a new era of avant-garde music.” (Music in Belgium).

In a playful quest, the group meanders back and forth in atmospheric complex improvisations between experimental music, krautrock, ambient and jazz. Inspired by science fiction, nature and obsolete sounds, Malo Moray’s subtly sarcastic project is often compared to the avant-garde works of John Zorn, Brian Eno, Faust and Sigor Rós.
“Noise and beauty embrace each other.” (Legacy Magazine).

In album productions, Malo Moray collaborates with renowned international artists such as Marc Urselli (multiple Grammy awards, Nick Cave, Lou Reed, John Zorn, Laurie Anderson).

For his ‘Fields’ tour in fall 2022 Malo Moray unites outstanding musicians* of the European avant-garde scene: Izabela Kaldunska (violin, electronics, PL), Marietheres Schneider (voice, electronics, GER), Philipp Rücker (saxophone, flutes, GER), Bethany M. Roberts (violin, banjo, UK), Hans Arnold (drums, GER), Ben Osborn (piano, electronics, UK).MALO MORAY & HIS INFLATABLE KNEE – “FIELDS” FALL 2022

Jens Fisker trio

Jens Fisker – guitar
Mariusz Praśniewski – bass
Daniel Sommer – drums

A seasoned jazz guitarist Jens Fisker has a rich sound and creative voice that carries his infectious love of the jazz tradition.
His most recent album Paysage is a first for his long standing trio and Jens’ work has been recognised by many Danish jazz awards such as the Jazz Clash Prize from the 2015 Jazz Festival of Sæby and regional Jazz Musician of the Year of 2012. Living on the North Sea Jens’ environment has a meaningful impact on the output of his compositions and musical energy.

Atmospheric compositions and sublime interaction are some of the keywords in Jens Fisker Trio. The band gives the audience an experience beyond the usual.

The solid group consists of outstanding musicians, inspired by modern jazz. Their unique sound draws clear strings to bebop, but it’s Nordic reverberation from Jens Fisker’s Northern Danish origins, are very clear in the music.
The compositions are characterized by a certain melancholy, but with the edge and roughness that Jens Fisker brings from his 2 years stay in Berlin.

The combination of the loyal bass player Mariusz Prasniewski and complementing drummer Daniel Sommer, sets a perfect stage for a solid trio with playfull expression.

Elisabeth Ruhe (vocal, flute, accordion, piano)
Zhenja Oks (vocal, guitar)

Trawy i Kamienie (Grass and Stones) are the three versatile musicians Emilia Niezbecka from Poland – vocal, violin, Dholki – Zhenja Oks from Ukraine – vocal, guitar, Bouzouki – and Elisabeth Ruhe from Germany – vocal, flute, accordion – who have met Berlin to present their international lyric verses.

Their songs are based on poems in Polish, German, Russian and Portuguese, and they tell about dreams, animals and shadows. The variety of lyrics is also reflected in the music, which is influenced by jazz and world music, folk and chanson, classical- and songwriter music. The compositions leave space for spontaneity and experimentation, for situational and intuitive modifications, which make every concert a unique experience.
