Schuler/Stemeseder/Dunston

Laura Schuler – violin
Elias Stemeseder – piano
Nick Dunston – double bass

NICK DUNSTON is a composer, improviser, instrumentalist, and “indispensable player on the New York avant-garde” (New York Times). In 2019 he was awarded the Van Lier Fellowship by Roulette Intermedium, which supported the world premieres of The Floor is Lava! (upright bass quintet), and La Operación (double saxophone trio with soprano voice). Also in 2019 he released his debut album Atlantic Extraction for double bass, drums, electric guitar, flute, and violin. From 2016-2019, he was a monthly contributor to Hot House Jazz Magazine. (vimeo.com/342125717)

LAURA SCHULER explores the violin’s diverse sound capacities while simultaneously weaving in her voice. She takes inspiration from nature, the I-Ching, and her wide musical background. What emerges are sounds and songs reverberating around a complex tension that defy any simple categorization. Laura works currently on her solo project under the name “Kate Birch”, leads her quartet and is part of the trio Esche. (www.lauraschuler.net)

ELIAS STEMESEDER performs on the acoustic piano and synthesizers in a variety of musical idioms ranging from the song-oriented music of Jim Black’s trio to contemporary classical pieces by John Zorn to the electric music of Eyebone. Current projects include collaborations with John Zorn (John Zorn’s Bagatelles), Greg Cohen Quintet, Philipp Gropper’s PHILM, Jim Black’s Malamute, Anna Webber’s Percussive Mechanics, Robert Landfermann Quintet, and OTIS+WEDDING. TRIBAL GATE

TRIBAL GATE is a musical group formed in Berlin in the summer of 2020. Consisting of Eldar Tsalikov on woodwinds, Martin Buhl on double bass and Fermín Merlo on drums, the group plays freely improvised music with a shared goal in mind, namely to explore the art of improvisation in as many different contexts as possible.
This has brought the group to seek out different locations all around Berlin, from clubs and galleries to the forests and the streets. And now the trio is gonna bring their fresh sound in Donau115.

To get an idea, take a look at this trailer of a session that the band did in one of the Berlin’s forests: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diT-jr8BvOQ

ONA Series

Olga Amelchenko – alto sax

ONA is a Slavic word which translates as SHE. ONA is Mirna Bogdanovic from Slovenia and Olga Amelchenko from Russia, two Berlin-based musicians who met at the Jazz Institut and have been friends ever since. Both active in the Berlin jazz scene, a mutual inspiration led to the idea of sharing a monthly series at their favourite club in Berlin, Donau115. Every month one of them will perform with some of their favourite musicians, either with existing bands or brand new projects – and you never know, they might even play together sometimes!

PAUL & FABIANA
We saw each other basically every day since the coronavirus pandemic started. Life has treated us well. We studied all kinds of music together, played on all kinds of instruments.
But what is the life of a musicians without you as an audience?
So we are more than happy to get out of our snail-shell and share an evening of music with our beloved Donau115 audience.

Depending on everybody´s mood we can throw in Lana del Reys Venice Bitch, or for the more demure ones, pure and chaste folk melodies, till we throw in the sponge.

Fabiana Striffler – violin, mandolin, vocals
Paul Santner – guitar, vocals

entrance: 5-100000 Euros suggested

Johannes Haage Drift

Johannes Haage guitar, compositions
Matthias Pichler bass
Joe Smith drums, compositions

english:

These musicians of German, Austrian and American origin met in their current home-base Berlin and have been playing extensively as a band for many years.
The Trio “DRIFT” mainly works with compositions by guitarist Johannes Haage and drummer Joe Smith which offer a great variety of stylistic starting points from which they embark on new musical journeys together, creating open spaces for spontaneous improvisation and mutual interplay. As in a dreamlike state, their music drifts from sparse to dense, from pop-like structures to free improvisation – but always staying true to the melody of the song and the calling of the moment.

Their current second album “Darwin´s Blues”, came out in 2019, which features both bass players who are actively involved in the band: Founding member Matthias Pichler (Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio, Marc Copland etc.) as well as Oliver Potratz (Klima Kalima, Helen Schneider, etc.)
The new compositions by Haage and Smith on the Album expand the concept of their debut album “Drift” by adding new elements like overdubs, loops, extended instrumental techniques and electronic modifications to the acoustic sound of the Band, thus opening up new pathways for fresh new live exploration of the material.

deutsch:

Esther van Maanen plays a solo brunch set.

During a solo concert by Esther van Maanen, you can expect a mix of classics from the sixties and her own brand of bluesy melodies. She covers Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Joni Mitchell among others.

She creates an intimate setting with songs that need an attentive ear. In her music she explores the combination between folk melodies and jazzy rhythms. She accompanies herself on guitar and piano, allowing her melodies to move with the flow of the instruments. People who were young in the sixties can be carried back to that time, and millennials might feel like buying a record player after a concert.

SoKo Steidle

Oliver Steidle – dr

Konzertbetrieb gesichert. Er ist seit Jahren Mitglied bei „PHILM“, „Der Rote Bereich“,
„Klima Kalima“ , spielte mit Peter Brötzmann, Andrea Parkins, Alexander von
Schlippenbach, Aki Takase, Louis Sclavis, Tristan Honsinger, Trevor Dunn, u.v.a., jettet

Training

Max Andrzejewski – dr, elec, voc
Johannes Schleiermacher – sax, fl, music easel, echo

TRAINING is the new duo of Johannes Schleiermacher (Sax, Flöte, Synth) and Max Andrzejewski (Drums, Synth, Electronics, Voice). A TRAINING for the most musical freedom, ecstasy and spirituality. Based on immediate, transparent, undogmatic compositional miniatures TRAINING is the tool, the springboard, the vessel for these needs.
The „maverick-aesthete“ Max Andrzejewski (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and „limit bursting“ Johannes Schleiermacher (ZEIT) deepened their collaboration in the last 10 years by playing international tours with the award winning band „Max Andrzejewski´s Hütte“. Since one year they focus on this personal duo project. Two highly creative players of the german scene in the somehow „seasonable“ line up – duo.

„Schleiermacher embodies the productive „island talent“ of a worldwide admired german Afro-Jazz-Funk-Szene.“ (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
„Max Andrzejewski is one of the most famous drummers in Berlin and beyond.“ (Tagesspiegel)
„And then, saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher works himself up into a noisy solo, which bursts all limits.“ (ZEIT)

Miss Nöyd at Donau115 Sunday Brunch

As Miss Nöyd, Northern-Norwegian born Berlin-based Bente Lorentzen creates tender, melancholic and pure folk-pop. Her songs are for the weak and the wounded, the strong and the sensible, the lovers and the left-behinds.

Inspired by the magic and violent nature of the North, you will find traces of nostalgic longing, tired memories and dreamy ocean waves in the repetitive guitar patterns and strong vocal delivery.

Her two first singles, ‘Blå og Gul’ and ‘Honest Mistake’ were both recorded live here at Donau! Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6O63YYB3On5bHNhCTnpmou?si=iZE905f2T8WRTez38m0NYA

Practically Married #26 w/Max Andrzejewski

Declan Forde – Piano
James Banner – Bass

special guest:
Max Andrzejewski – Drums

We are back after a 4 month pause from our series, presenting original music and improvisation with long term collaborator Max Andrzejewski – there’ll be seats in the house and we’re streaming as part of Jazzwoche Berlin – more info to follow!

CORONA INFORMATION – Only approximately 25 people at a time may sit in our bar / stage area to enjoy the music. (The exact number is subject to change as requirements become more strict or more lax over time. Our staff will keep you informed of the most up-to-date requirements, z.b. contact tracing, etc., as conditions change.)

At present, we do not have a reservation system, so if you want a seat, come early. If you show up and there’s no place in the bar left, don’t leave! Read below, and come and enjoy a drink at our expanded sidewalk table seating.

To allow more people to hear the music (and pay the musicians!), we are temporarily switching to a “two-shows-per-night” system. This means that if you were one of the 25 who watched the first set in the bar, we invite you to join us for a drink in our sidewalk seating outside or in the cozy back room for a drink. This will free up space during the second set for people who were outside waiting. Even in a pandemic, there’s plenty of music to go around!

This group began like many of the fine things in life – by complete accident. Separate chance meetings (one on a bus, and one in a bar) brought us together. We have been close friends and played music together since the summer of 2015 and have no intention of stopping. There was never a ‘plan’ to how we should play together, or what material. The nature of the music that we play has progressed as intuitively as it began.

By writing this I do not mean to convey a sense of aimlessness to the group; merely to explain that we have never try to force the music in one particular direction. Everything is open to interpretation, and no two nights are the same.

Discovering our mutual love of Duke Ellington’s music – as well as of other great Jazz composers such as Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller, Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols – has helped to shape the sound of the group. Add to that some Free Jazz sensibilities and you get a trio with a distinct and personal sound…we hope.

We will of course continue to monitor and closely follow all guidance from the Ordnungsamt and the Berlin Senate to protect us all from Covid-19. This means that only approximately 25 people at a time may sit in our bar / stage area to enjoy the music. (The exact number is subject to change as requirements become more strict or more lax over time. We are doing our best to make shows at tiny Donau115 as great as they can be in a very strict situation. We can’t promise we’ll get it perfect on the first try, so please be patient with us. We are also very open to your suggestions. If you have any good ideas after your first post-Covid visit that you think might make things run better, by all means reach out to us: info@donau115.de.

Julius tries to think outside of categories and to combine different kinds of music that inspire him. Complex rhythmical structures, playful, quick change of roles, free improvisations, simple and catchy melodies as well as a special harmonic language meet. He is lucky enough to have his compositions executed by one of the most sought-after players from the Berlin scene. Even though many parameters are set through the compositions there is still a good amount of freedom that makes the music sound different each time.

Concerts starting this week: Hans & Ruby & Chad // Paul Santner Solo // Taco Tuesday & Saturday, Mexican Brunch Sunday /

JAZZ BLEIBT!
MUSIC SURVIVES!
STREAMING’S OK, BUT
MUSIC’S BETTER LIVE!

We are thrilled to announce that our regular series of concerts begins again in August. Here are the specifics:

– Beginning this Saturday, August 1st, concerts are back as usual, Tue-Sun.

– Our very tasty, musico-nutritious collaboration with Taco Kween will continue as usual on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

– We will of course continue to monitor and closely follow all guidance from the Ordnungsamt and the Berlin Senate to protect us all from Covid-19. We’ll still need to wait awhile before cramming people inside a small space. This means that only approximately 25 people at a time may sit in our bar / stage area to enjoy the music. (The exact number is subject to change as requirements become more strict or more lax over time. Our staff will keep you informed of the most up-to-date requirements, z.b. contact tracing, etc., as conditions change.)

– At present, we do not have a reservation system, so if you want a seat, come early. If you show up and there’s no place in the bar left, don’t leave! Read below, and come and enjoy a drink at our expanded sidewalk table seating.
