Beatdenker plays live and improvises every time and everywhere anew. For his Postcontemporary Brain Beats, he always brings his MPC for drum and fun samples, his loop station and his guitar synthesizer for nice and ugly melodies, fluid chords and mean basslines.
For his Donau series he invites different wonderful musicians for different music. It can be beaty, noisy, sensitive, funny, weird, something… but it will always be fresh, encouraging, real, spirited, bubbly and full of energy. Yippie!

It all started when Jason burned out at the beginning of the pandemic. He found himself helpless and hopeless at the foot of a massive redwood tree in Northern California, guitar in hand. In his quarantined stupor, his hands started detuning the guitar, until he stumbled upon a tuning which seemed to resonate with the trees. From that point forward, he began finding tunings for different spaces, and writing songs for these spaces, too. This project had so much momentum and seemed to be guided by so much light that he eventually started singing (a big break from his musical education and career as a jazz guitarist).
As it happens, Bertram stumbled upon one of Jason’s enchanted alternately tuned guitars. He felt the call of the forests, fluffy sunlight, and refreshing winter winds. He began to play some of his classical repertoire only to discover something too special to ever be forgotten.
To start, Brilliant Bertram will perform a few classical guitar pieces both in and out of tune (he will perform pieces in both standard tunings and in the alternate tunings which greatly alter the color, shape, smell, and sound of each piece). Next, Jubilant Jason will perform his singer-songwriter project, Sun Fluff, with Fantastic Friede and Joyful Julius. He will be exploring vast landscapes of alternate tunings as well, borrowing from American folk, classical, and jazz (along with a healthy dose of North Indian classical).
We wonderfully, whimsically, and warmly welcome you!

Nathan Ott Quartett „Shades of Red“

Im Verlauf einer sechsjährigen intensiven Zusammenarbeit demonstrierte das Nathan Ott Quartett auf zwei Tonträgern und vier Konzerttourneen eindrucksvoll, wie fruchtbar eine solch generations-überschreitend interkontinentale Jazz-Begegnung sein kann. Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit war dabei immer wieder die Tatsache, dass der Miles Davis-Veteran Dave Liebman gemeinsam mit drei europäischen Jazzmusikern aus zwei jüngeren Generationen ein derartig offenes Format für improvisatorischen Dialog auf Augenhöhe entwickelte.
Als Liebman dann Ende 2019 aus gesundheitlichen Gründen eine Konzerttournee absagen musste und sich seitdem vom Tourleben zurückgezogen hat, kam mit Christof Lauer eine der prägendsten Stimmen des europäischen Jazz hinzu und verwandelte den Klang und das Innenleben des Ensembles. Zusammen mit dem eindringlichen Ton des
frisch gebackenen SWR-Jazzpreisträgers Sebastian Gille verschmilzt Lauers Spiel zu einer unverwechselbaren Textur und wird durch die elegante Elastizität des dänischen Bassisten Jonas Westergaard, einer der gefragtesten Tieftöner des Landes vervollständigt.
Die Neubesetzung knüpft an die Kontinuität des Formats in der Begegnung verschiedener Musikergenerationen an und schöpft als improvisierendes Ensemble höchster Agilität aus einem orchestralen Klangspektrum surrealistischer Transparenz und poetischer Eleganz, ohne jemals an Bodenhaftung zu verlieren – ein hochintensives Live-Erlebnis!

Can Olgun, Matthias Pichler and Julian Erdem share a love of improvised music and the jazz tradition. All spent several years in New York City, where they often played together. Matthias and Julian are now back in Berlin, while Can is still in New York. However, the three musicians have continued to play private sessions whenever they were in one place at the same time. As individuals they are involved in various projects with musicians such as Thomas Morgan, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Jochen Rueckert, recording, performing and touring around the world. This is a rare opportunity to hear them perform in public as a trio.

The fearless Berlin-based multi-instrumentalists Paul Santner and Eldar Tsalikov will be leading another night of music at one of their favourite venues in the city. This time, they shall present one solo set each, on an instrument (or instruments) of their own choice. Old jazz tunes, free improvs or maybe some traditional songs? Guitar, piano or double bass? Singing or not? Surely, one thing is clear – this Sunday you’re in for a surprise!

About Paul Santner:
I’m a musician originally from Salzburg/Austria. I started playing the trumpet and the piano as a small kid. Watching my dad play in Big Bands I quickly decided I wanted to become a musician.
As a teenager I picked up the double bass and the guitar, played in youth orchestras and Jazz Bands.
I moved to Berlin to study what might be called “Jazz” with Kurt Rosenwinkel and Greg Cohen amongst others. As a freelancing musician I have played with different artists from the Song-World and Improvised-Music-World including Fabiana Striffler, Ruby and Hans Bilger, Rachel Sermanni, 1000 Gram, Jessie Monk and Greg Cohen.
In the past I’ve mostly performed on guitar and bass and sang a little bit. I’ve always felt drawn to the piano, though, and more so recently.
I will present my own and old songs from different places and improvisations on those songs.

About Eldar Tsalikov:
Born in 1993 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia into a musicians family. At the age of eight Eldar began learning saxophone at the Kim Nazaretov Children’s Jazz School, eventually picking up piano and flute as well. After ten years of studying classical and jazz repertoire he graduated in 2011, after which he moved to Berlin in order to continue his studies at the Jazz Institut Berlin. During his time at the institute, Eldar discovered his big love for clarinet and it’s sound, which lead him to embrace it as his ‘second main’ instrument. In 2018 Eldar graduated receiving his bachelor- and master’s degrees.
Since the beginning of his artistic life in Berlin, Eldar has been not only working on his performative skills in jazz music and it’s numerous subgenres, but also expanding his knowledge of various folk music traditions from around the world (e.g. Turkish, Greek, Balkan, Arabic, Hindustani, Carnatic). While developing his own style of playing, he got to collaborate with numerous European and Western performers of various kinds, most notably Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Laurie Anderson, Eyvind Kang, Marcin Masecki, Manlio Maresca, Tobias Delius, Elias Stemeseder, Anna Webber. With those and many other artists, Eldar got to travel around different countries, performing in worldwide recognised venues and concert halls such as «Birdland» (New York / USA), «Elbphilharmonie» (Hamburg, Germany), «Konzerthaus Berlin» (Berlin, Germany), «TivoliVredenburg» (Utrecht, Netherlands), as well as taking part in festivals such as «Copenhagen Jazz Fest» (Denmark), «Ascona Jazz Fest» (Switzerland), «French Quarter Fest» (New Orleans / USA), «Glasgow Jazz Festival» (Scotland).
