Two-Song Tuesday

///// TWO-SONG TUESDAY /////

[sign up 19:00 // start 20:00]

Calling all songwriters!
Calling all composers and instrumentalists and synth wizards!
Calling all poets and writers and storytellers!

Do you have new solo or duo material to present? Join us for Donau115’s regular open stage series, Two-Song Tuesday.
Your set may include TWO SONGS or last TEN MINUTES, WHICHEVER IS SHORTER (e.g. two seven-minute songs = NO, three two-minute songs = NO).

“How do I get booked?”

– The bar staff tell you how to sign up, starting at 7pm.

– The first performer will begin at 20:00

– NO SOUNDCHECKS. Be ready. Slip on, blow minds, slip off. Setup is 90 seconds. Sets are no longer than 10 minutes. THERE IS A STOPWATCH TO ENSURE THIS. If your set goes beyond 10 minutes, the stopwatch goes off in the middle of your song. (The alarm sound is in the key of C#, FYI.)

– The host will call you to the stage in a random order. You may not reserve a specific time slot.

– We let as many people play as possible. There is usually time for 12 performers. Some weeks more, some weeks less.

“What can I play?”

– This is entirely up to you, but DO NOT PLAY THE SAME SONG OVER AND OVER EVERY WEEK. THIS IS BORING. TRY NEW THINGS.

– Out of respect for our neighbours:

— you may NOT use loud percussion and loud bass-heavy signals into the PA.

— you are welcome to use our backline, which includes a piano, two generic vocal microphones, a guitar cable directly into our PA, and a small amplifier.

— DON’T COUNT ON US HAVING ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE FEW THINGS LISTED ABOVE. COME PREPARED.

Mi, 14. September
Vincent Meissner Trio

Vincent Meissner- Piano
Henri Reichmann – drums
Josef Zeimetz – Bass

You do not hear slavish imitation here; this is an astonishingly balanced statement of intent from a highly original talent. He is fully aware of the foundations that his predecessors have left him and is able to use them as the jumping-off point into his own expressive world.
Vincent and his fellow musicians are concerned above all to be honest and authentic in what they do. Indeed, that is something they see as far more important than being revolutionary firebrands.

These are musicians with a clear sense of form and structure, sometimes finding the humorous and the euphoric, at others the melancholy and the poetry of ballads. At any event, each of them has many different sides to him as a musician, and together they find surprises and all kinds of fascinating and many-hued timbres as they develop Vincent’s compositions through playing them.
They experiment with complex shapes and rhythms, and yet we hear their joy in playing together. There is also a remarkable sense for melodies that are unusual and memorable. There is exploration going on here, and connections and reconnections to be found as they shake up the material and put it back together in different permutations.

This is spontaneous music, and yet there is nothing random about it. Ideas are developed, refined, and deepened. Robust… refined… subtle… sparkling!

This is Young, even very young, German Jazz at its best and most life-affirming.

Do, 15. September
Florian Herzog – “Almost Natural”

Sebastian Gille – sax
Elias Stemeseder – piano/synth
Florian Herzog – double bass
Leif Berger – drums

This quartet consisting of Herzog’s long-time companions from New York and Cologne is the culmination of years of composing and experimenting behind closed doors. Now this band will finally be let loose upon the world to present these experiments made of strange grooves, wild improvisations and and outlandish ear-worm melodies.

Fr, 16. September
Filipe Duarte Chamber Ensemble

Filipe Duarte – Guitar / Composition
Natasha Jaffe – Cello
Julius Gawlik – Saxophone / Clarinet
Simon Quinn – Doublebass

Marking a departure from the traditional jazz formations, this ensemble explores the possibilities that lie at the border between jazz and classical idioms.

Obsessed with alternative musical forms, Filipe’s writing leans towards the contemporary classical world, highly influenced by 20th century composers. Improvised sections and highly dense written structures are woven together for an experiment in texture, form and color.

Julius tries to think outside of categories and to combine different kinds of music that inspire him. Complex rhythmical structures, playful, quick change of roles, free improvisations, simple and catchy melodies as well as a strong harmonic language of its own come together.
